Defined Tag: Bird Nest Fern.
Bird Nest Fern or Asplenium nidus derives its peculiar name from the nest like structure that is formed by the fronds of the fern. The frond forms an upright rosette that results in a nest like structure being formed at the bottom. The nest is usually littered by bird droppings, leaves etc. Bird Nest Fern grows best in the tropical and sub-tropical climate and therefore, is a native of the rain forests of Asia, Africa, Australia and Polynesia. It is a spectacular plant that grows up to a height of 20-60 inches and about 8-10 inches in width. The young fern has apple green fronds that develop a dark blackish midrib as the plant ages. Bird Ferns are very showy, owing to their large and distinctive appearance that makes them conspicuous.
Bird Nest Fern requires a climate that is bright, warm and humid and grows best in soils that are well drained. The plant needs a continuous supply of moisture when it is growing. However, care should be taken that the soil does not become water logged or heavy due to excessive water as this may result in the plant death. The water supply should also be decreased during the winters but care should be taken to prevent the plant from drying out absolutely. A regular supply of fertilizers should be administered to plant during the time when it is growing. Bird Fern germinates best at a temperature of 20-21 Centigrade. It should ideally be grown in a potting medium with water-holding capacity and sufficient air movement.
Some of the popular species of Bird Nest Fern are Asplenium simplicifrons that is found in Australia and more specifically in the northern Queensland region, is ornamental and can be hung in a basket to provide an attractive look to the surroundings and the Asplenium serratum that is called the American Bird Fern but is a native of the New-World tropics. Bird Nest fern is produced in large quantities and is also grown commercially for export purposes. Bird Fern also possesses medicinal properties and is widely used in herbal medicines as a cure of many diseases.
