Once you’ve decided where the pool is going and how you want the area to look around it, its time to get your swimming pool deck built. How do you decide which materials to use? There are so many options open to you. Only one of the deciding factors should include appearance, as there are other equally important things to consider when designing your swimming pool deck.
There are many materials worth considering based on where you live, how much use the deck will get, how much you want to spend, how you want it to look and how much work you want to do on maintenance and repairs. Most people want the deck built with only the most minimal follow-up required. That will influence your choice of materials for your swimming pool deck.
You can consider using concrete, tiles, brick or wood. Flagstone, while good looking, and popular, can overheat during those sunny days burning feet and so may not be the best choice. Brick has the same tendency. Both may also be slippery when wet, a dangerous characteristic of the swimming pool deck you want to surround your pool. These are also both fairly expensive options.
If your preference is for durability and a more reasonable cost consideration, then poured concrete is certainly an option worth bearing in mind. It is affordable and can be finished with an assortment of treatments that can be very attractive. This option should only be considered in places that have warm climates as freezing can crack the concrete.
A wood swimming pool deck is another option. These are very practical since they are relatively easy to make to your configuration, and are not overly expensive. But, this option does require yearly maintenance. This wood must be stained and sealed to maintain its appearance and keep it from being damaged. Wood can be used anywhere. Another excellent option is the use of composite materials. This material combines polymer resins with plastic and recycled wood to make a material stronger, more durable and requiring less maintenance while still being relatively cost effective and attractive.
Whichever material you choose for your swimming pool deck, make sure its one that will satisfy your needs for a long time, the last thing you want is to have to replace it.
