Car Hire in Alicante, Spain
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios
If you are planning on going to Alicante, Spain, you've picked a great place to drive. As you know, Alicante is a beautiful Spanish coastal city with plenty to see and so car hire in Alicante is a good choice.
There are of course numerous places that will cater to car hire in Alicante. The majority of them are located in the town proper, at the train station, and at the airport. It is highly recommended that you avoid the airport's rental facilities if you are on a budget. Those offices at the train station are a little less expensive, with the downtown rental offices being the most economic, on the whole.
If you're coming from the United States, be sure to have your driver's license, international license, and even your passport available, as this is often required for car hire in Alicante. Further, you may consider bringing your auto insurance policy if this covers rental cars in foreign lands. If you are in an accident, having this on hand may serve you in ways previously unthought-of.
On the subject of auto insurance, when procuring car hire in Alicante, do accept the optional insurance. No one expects to get into an accident, yet when it happens they always regret having not paid a few euros more for this necessary service. As well, this will give you peace of mind, that you may enjoy your trip all the more so.
As well as a wide range of automobile makes and models to choose from -including American and Asian makes, there are numerous extras that can be gotten. Though many will cost extra, the majority of them can be obtained by simply reserving the vehicle in a timely fashion. Some of these extras include: baby and child seats, booster seats, roof racks, air conditioning (don't always assume that a car will have this feature), and yes, an automatic transmission.
When getting car hire in Alicante, be sure to cover everything during the reservation process, to ensure that nothing is last minute, thus taking away from precious holiday or business time. If you intend to have others driving the rental vehicle, this should be stipulated at the time of reservation, and will often cost an additional yet nominal fee.
There are other considerations, of course. One is that the price of fuel is nearly twice in Europe to what it is in the States, so be prepared for this. One option to saving money is getting a diesel-driven vehicle. It's still more expensive than in the States, but cheaper than other forms of petrol.
Make sure that you've looked into the amount of mileage that is free and at what number of kilometers traveled you must begin to pay an additional fee (usually something equating to a few cents per kilometer) -which can add up quickly, so maybe prepare yourself a chart showing just how much you'll be charged per every twenty-five or fifty kilometers.
Lastly, don't be afraid to ask for any extras, like maps or concierge business cards from different hotels and restaurants. With a little extra assistance here and there you'll save numerous euros that can stay in your pocket!
